  • An Inside Look at Google

Posted by admin on January 29th, 2010 and filed under scholarships for women | 25 Comments »

I’ve represented Google at many events for women in engineering, and I’m always asked the same thing: “What’s it like to work there?” I certainly don’t mind discussing the subject, but I often think it would be great if more people could see it for themselves. Well, now you can. We invite you to take a sneak peek inside Google and hear straight from some of our female engineers what life here is really like. Of course, our goal of recruiting as many gifted female engineers as we can also means encouraging young women who are still in school. So I’d like to issue a hearty congrats to the winners of this year’s Anita Borg scholarships. – Jen Fitzpatrick, Engineering Director, Google

St. Petersburg College BPW Scholarship House Groundbreaking

Posted by admin on January 29th, 2010 and filed under scholarship money | No Comments »

The Education Foundation of the Florida Federation of Business and Professional Womens Clubs Inc. will partner with St. Petersburg College and the St. Petersburg College Foundation to build a house for deserving female students, it was announced jointly today. It will be the first time the college, which has no dorms, has joined with a partner to provide residential housing.

The building will house 16 women who cannot afford the burden of paying both tuition and housing. While the exact location has not yet been determined, the building is expected to be located close to either SPCs St. Petersburg/ Gibbs campus or its Downtown Center. A search for a suitable site is now under way.

We are very excited about the prospect of being able to provide quality housing for women students who cant afford the cost of housing while going to school, said Susan Reiter, SPCs director of Facilities Planning & Institutional Services. This will be the first housing that SPC has been able to provide to students since the college was founded in 1927. Were delighted to be able to partner in this project with the Education Foundation of the Florida Federation of Business and Professional Womens Clubs.

Since the site has not yet been selected, a completion date for the home has not been determined. The Education Foundation and the college aim to have the first residents ready to move in sometime in 2009.

The Education Foundation of the Florida Federation of BPW Clubs, Inc. began its mission to provide college housing for deserving women in 1965 with its first venture at Florida State University in Tallahassee. That first facility offered housing to 21 women who possessed outstanding academic records and who demonstrated financial need.

From that beginning more than 40 years ago, the Education Foundation of the Florida Federation of BPW Clubs Inc., has worked toward its goal of providing a scholarship house to serve female students at every state-supported college and university in Florida. The women experience a cooperative living/learning environment. Students living in the scholarship houses pay nominal charges for housing and share such living expenses as food, housekeeping and utilities.

In addition, students in the Education Foundation scholarship houses have opportunities to meet members of local supporting BPW clubs. These members, who are business executives, entrepreneurs or consultants, provide mentoring and networking opportunities to the student residents. In the past, the students association with the women has resulted in internships and employment after graduation.

We recognized many years ago that there are many women in Florida who could excel in college if they simply had a good, safe, affordable place to live on or near campus, said Education Foundation president Christine Weigle, who is also a member of one of St. Petersburgs two BPW local organizations. It has been the dream of our members to provide that assistance in a true women-helping-women spirit.

Over the years, almost all money for construction has come from within the membership of the BPW clubs that support the Education Foundation, Weigle noted. Part of that fundraising effort involves a tradition known as Hawg Callin. At each regular meeting, BPW groups pass around a piggy bank to which individuals contribute money toward the scholarship houses. At the Education Foundations annual conference, members enthusiastically surrender their organizations piggy banks when the conference chairwoman calls in the hawgs.

The Education Foundation has also specified that the SPC scholarship house be built according to environmentally friendly or green standards and be accessible to individuals at all levels of physical ability, fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The St. Petersburg College Foundation, which raises money to help make a college education possible for those who need financial assistance, also is partnering to help make the house a reality. SPC Foundation Director Paul Hanna said the house would be a major step toward higher education for deserving women.

The foundation is delighted to be able to partner with BPW and to help make this house a reality, Hanna said.

The SPC residential house will be the fourth such facility to be funded and built by the Education Foundation of the Florida Federation of BPW Clubs Inc. Besides the original house in Tallahassee, there are residences at the University of Central Florida in Orlando and at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.

    British Alumni Traveling Scholarship Application

Posted by admin on January 29th, 2010 and filed under scholarship application | No Comments »

In my last four years at Lakefield I’ve see a revolution in the ways that people use the Internet. People who would normally be passive spectators on the Internet have become active contributors. this observation lead me to thinking that the traditional way of communicating with our endorsers of this scholarship are vastly outdated. living in a world that no longer relies on a mail ship that can be hindered by the ice levels of the St. Lawrence. I urge the British alumni to get with the times and embrace the technologies that are at the fingertips of the students of LCS today. Their communication should no longer be the written word, but the extravaganza of contemporary youth communication. If awarded the British Alumni Traveling Scholarship next year instead of a journal, I plan on keeping a video blog. By doing so I hope to generate more interest in my travels than a book in the library collecting dust. Hi my name is Taylor Mackenzie and this is my application for the British Alumni Traveling scholarship.

Over the last year I’ve been S.I.C of trustees and a student Trustee. The main job of a student trustee is to give trustees a student perspective on issues that the school is facing. One of the issues that Lakefield College has been facing is finding new applicants, though the 75% enrolment success rate for students who visit the school shows the magic of the Lakefield campus and atmosphere. The only issue remaining is that it is hard to inspire people to come to a small town outside of Peterborough when they have no knowledge of the school. Having a student advocate the school by blogging about some of the opportunities that Lakefield has to offer, would help peoples’ awareness of the school. If I am chosen as the candidate for this scholarship, my blog will help remedy this and many other issues.

I’ve always made it a personal goal to encompass the motto of the school, Mens sana in corpore sano, which translated from Latin means, a sound mind in a sound body. Ever since attending Lakefield, I’ve maintained a healthy lifestyle playing on a competitive sports team every term. That has taught me that I have to do something active every day to live the lifestyle I want to live.

When I graduate from university, I hope to become an industrial designer. In the last few years, design in modern products has taken leaps and bounds. Any company that is in the business of selling their products must be aware of the importance of product design for their business to be successful. Apple can credit their incredible success in the last decade to the superior design of their products. If chosen for this scholarship, I plan to launch another blog about design in modern products. I hope to use this blog to meet designers in England who are on the cutting edge of design and interview them and see their perspective on the world. I hope to use this blog to investigate the future of products in a market that demands environmental consciousness, so to hopefully one day build a business that makes environmentally friendly products, using this blog as a marketing tool.

Another reason I would make a good candidate for this scholarship is that I love to travel and I’m a well traveled person. Every time I travel, I learn more about myself and the world in which I live. Most recently I travelled to Thailand, with the school, and India, with the head of World Literacy of Canada. Both of these trips taught me how to deal with being put in new situations. Another thing these trips taught me is how to be more ecologically friendly. For example, in India when people are selling food on the street, instead of serving your food in some disposable bowl that will end up in a landfill, they serve you in bowl made out of leaves pressed together which is cheaper and completely biodegradable. If in North America we even began to take on some of these ideas, we would live a far more sustainable life. Some day I would like to design products such as theses that are environmental conscious and practical.

Now that youve gotten to know me, Taylor Mackenzie, you can witness my passion for design, my vision for my future, and you can rest assured that this scholarship will be in good hands.

No one has any idea how much I was dreading this mission. I hate stealth missions in non stealth games. I only got caught once, so it wasn’t that bad.

This was played for fun, so don’t judge too harshly.

Harvard Law freshman Mark Watson, having been cut off by his millionaire dad, tries to fund his education by tinting his skin with tanning pills and passing as African-American.
