Do I qualify for an Education Deduction and Credit if my Scholarship amount was higher than my tuition amount?

Posted by admin on October 28th, 2010 and filed under education scholarship | 4 Comments »

I have a form 198T in which the total for box 1 is $7000 and box 5 is $12000. I included part of this amount ($12000 minus tuition minus books and supplies) as part of my income. Under deductions I included all of the information in my 198T and stated that box 5 was not taxed. Doing this makes turbotax say I am not qualified for any deductions or credits. Is this correct?

    Thanks!

How do I go about getting a Grant? So I can go to college?

Posted by admin on October 28th, 2010 and filed under college grant | 2 Comments »

I am wanting to know how to get a grant for college so I can go and be a nurse.I need to do this for my daughter and me

Check out Federal Student Aid Web Site or FAFSA http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

I suggest you explore all federal funding and grant options at the Federal Student Aid website http://federalstudentaid.ed.gov/

You may also want to read the Handbook of the Pell Grant — this is an 86 page document that contains everything about the grant

    http://ifap.ed.gov/sfahandbooks/attachments/0203Vo3MasterFile.pdf

Or you can call the Federal Student Aid Information Center http://www.ed.gov/programs/fpg/gtepfpg.pdf at 1-800-433-3243 and ask them if there are any programs for you

Aside from FAFSA http://www.fafsa.ed.gov and Pell Grant http://www.ed.gov/programs/fpg/index.html , you may want to explore private foundation grants

    Also check out Fastweb http://www.fastweb.com

Can I get funding for college?

Posted by admin on October 28th, 2010 and filed under college funding | 1 Comment »

I live in the Cleveland, OH area and had some financial problems for the past 2 years. I took a big pay cut at work and ended up having to declare bankrupcy and had to foreclose on my home. This job has now laid me off. I was wondering if I could better my financial situation long term by going to college. Will the government lend the funding to me or should I not even try to pursue this?

Getting federal loans to go to school are not based on your credit score. As long as you are a US citizen/eligible non-citizen, have not defaulted on any federal education loans (Stafford, perkins, etc.) you should be eligible for federal Stafford loans since they are not based on credit and you do not have to start paying them back until 6 months after you leave school.
