If a scholarship application asks me "How much financial assistance will you require?". What should I put?
The financial aid office of the college [even if it is one you are not applying to] has a listing of expected expenses. You are encouraged to use those numbers.
Some may be higher than you expect, some may be lower. But, from experience, the numbers are usually pretty good and the nice thing about them is that the financial aid people will accept them.
Good luck to you – and if I may offer some advice, beware of advice from well-meaning people.
