  • Scholarships for women returning to college?

Posted by admin on November 30th, 2009 and filed under scholarships for women | 5 Comments »

Hey there all – a buddy of mine asked if I knew of any places that might be able to help her financially go back to nursing school – and I was stumped.
She would like to quit her job and go full time – are there any other options than student loans that you know of?
    Thanks a bunch

Nursing is one of the few professions that has a student loan forgiveness program for critical need areas. It is because there is a nursing shortage. I would not rule them out if I were her. Also, major companies or products such as Tylenol and Johnson & Johnson offer scholarships. However, after graduation, the student loans can’t be consolidated otherwise the option for student loan forgiveness will end. I will list some other free sources to locate money for college.

First, the college’s financial aid office and website has a list of private scholarships offered from outside organizations and companies. Sometimes a college major’s website will list scholarships, too.

Second, the public library has a book listing scholarships with some not even listed on the web.

Third, fill out the FAFSA form. It will help tap into federal and state need based financial aid along with scholarship money from the college itself. It is based on the parents’ income and savings along with your income and savings. The form becomes available on January 1 for the upcoming fall semester or quarter. It needs to be renewed each year until college graduation. This should be filled out in her senior year.

Fourth, search Google.com and Yahoo.com for nursing school grants and scholarships tied to your state. Many states offer money to students wanting to study nursing.

Finally, I recommend joining several free membership scholarship search websites. There are scholarships for a variety of things including ethnicity, clubs, hobbies, and even wearing duct tape to the high school prom. Most are updated on a regular basis. Most offer a customized search based on information entered onto a form on the website.

    Good luck!

Have her check out http://www.fastweb.com and http://www.scholarships.com for private scholarships. The school she attends might also offer scholarships.

Hi there! I have been looking into this myself. I do not know what area of the country you are in or what specific local programs you might have there, but there is a website ….ED.gov which will give financial assistance information, and at one place in the body of their information there will be a link you can highlight to find out information on a federal scholarship program and possibly others. I just read these two based on information I had obtained for myself. These pages give access to a lot of information, and if you have to contact every one of them until someone gets specific to your need, and even better, if it can be met in your local area, that would be great. There is a lot of money available, especially if you are handicapped, on limited or fixed income due to disability, or circumstances, and a lot of other specific criteria which in some of these cases give you some great opportunities if you qualify. It is also a blessing to know there are people who still see the need and care enough to have the desire to help those of us who because of specific hardships could not further ourselves in this way without their help. I wish you the very best in your search, and you are welcome to email me and let me know if you find even other areas in your search which would benefit others, and both of us can pass that information to any who would be searching as we have. Some Community Action Programs have seminars on financial aid and education if you are in a large metropolitan area as I am. It would be great to know how you did. Good Luck!
