In my last four years at Lakefield I’ve see a revolution in the ways that people use the Internet. People who would normally be passive spectators on the Internet have become active contributors. this observation lead me to thinking that the traditional way of communicating with our endorsers of this scholarship are vastly outdated. living in a world that no longer relies on a mail ship that can be hindered by the ice levels of the St. Lawrence. I urge the British alumni to get with the times and embrace the technologies that are at the fingertips of the students of LCS today. Their communication should no longer be the written word, but the extravaganza of contemporary youth communication. If awarded the British Alumni Traveling Scholarship next year instead of a journal, I plan on keeping a video blog. By doing so I hope to generate more interest in my travels than a book in the library collecting dust. Hi my name is Taylor Mackenzie and this is my application for the British Alumni Traveling Scholarship.
Over the last year I’ve been S.I.C of trustees and a student Trustee. The main job of a student trustee is to give trustees a student perspective on issues that the school is facing. One of the issues that Lakefield College has been facing is finding new applicants, though the 75% enrolment success rate for students who visit the school shows the magic of the Lakefield campus and atmosphere. The only issue remaining is that it is hard to inspire people to come to a small town outside of Peterborough when they have no knowledge of the school. Having a student advocate the school by blogging about some of the opportunities that Lakefield has to offer, would help peoples’ awareness of the school. If I am chosen as the candidate for this scholarship, my blog will help remedy this and many other issues.
I’ve always made it a personal goal to encompass the motto of the school, Mens sana in corpore sano, which translated from Latin means, a sound mind in a sound body. Ever since attending Lakefield, I’ve maintained a healthy lifestyle playing on a competitive sports team every term. That has taught me that I have to do something active every day to live the lifestyle I want to live.
When I graduate from university, I hope to become an industrial designer. In the last few years, design in modern products has taken leaps and bounds. Any company that is in the business of selling their products must be aware of the importance of product design for their business to be successful. Apple can credit their incredible success in the last decade to the superior design of their products. If chosen for this scholarship, I plan to launch another blog about design in modern products. I hope to use this blog to meet designers in England who are on the cutting edge of design and interview them and see their perspective on the world. I hope to use this blog to investigate the future of products in a market that demands environmental consciousness, so to hopefully one day build a business that makes environmentally friendly products, using this blog as a marketing tool.
Another reason I would make a good candidate for this scholarship is that I love to travel and I’m a well traveled person. Every time I travel, I learn more about myself and the world in which I live. Most recently I travelled to Thailand, with the school, and India, with the head of World Literacy of Canada. Both of these trips taught me how to deal with being put in new situations. Another thing these trips taught me is how to be more ecologically friendly. For example, in India when people are selling food on the street, instead of serving your food in some disposable bowl that will end up in a landfill, they serve you in bowl made out of leaves pressed together which is cheaper and completely biodegradable. If in North America we even began to take on some of these ideas, we would live a far more sustainable life. Some day I would like to design products such as theses that are environmental conscious and practical.
Now that youve gotten to know me, Taylor Mackenzie, you can witness my passion for design, my vision for my future, and you can rest assured that this scholarship will be in good hands.

My name is Phoebe Walker and I am currently looking for a full scholarship to an NCAA Div 1 University starting in the Fall of 2008.
I am currently ranked within the top 5 in my State and I am ranked within the top 90 Australian female players, which continues to climb now that I have completed my schooling. I compete at the highest club level in my state as the number one player in the team and have done so for the past two years with considerable success.
For more then 5 years I have been a member of the South Australian State Tennis Program in numerous talent squads and the South Australian Optus Tennis Academy, where at one stage I was the only female member selected. I was then offered a place in the South Australian Institute of Sport, which is an academy for the highest achieving sports people in the state of South Australia.
I contributed to the success of the Marryatville High School Tennis Team. Our Team finished top over the 5 years of my schooling, making us the best tennis school in South Australia. The school was regularly ranked in the top 2 schools Australia wide.
I have also attended a Talented Athletes Program Camp. Twice I was invited to attend the Lleyton Hewitt International Tennis Camp, a camp identifying future tennis stars. I was also a member of the Junior Hopman Cup Team.
With the recent conclusion of my secondary schooling I am currently preparing to compete in ITFs, AMTs and Satellite Tournaments for the next 6 months so my ranking will continue to climb and I will be ready to perform at my peak for college tennis in America.
Tennis has been such a major part of my life that I want to continue playing in the highly competitive environment of intercollegiate tennis in the USA.
I have attached a list of most of my awards and accomplishments over the past 5 years.
Please let me know if you require further information.
Regards,
Phoebe Walker
